“Let’s go out to eat!”
“We just ate out yesterday.”
“Come on! It’ll be fun.”
“How do you plan on paying to eat out?”
“I can pay.”
“Don’t encourage him!”
You listened to the group argue before deciding to step in and intervene. “It’s great that you’re offering to pay, Asami, but I’d really rather not owe you anything and I don’t have any money myself at the time.”
The dark haired girl pouted at you. “You wouldn’t owe me anything! I just want to take you guys out to eat.”
Bolin added his input from his spot on the couch. “And I want to be taken out to eat!”
A quiet laugh left your lips when you heard that, but you still refused to go with the group for dinner. “You guys should go without me, I have chores to do, anyways.”
Korra and Bolin cheered, racing out of the door, but Asami and Mako lingered, as always.
“Are you sure you’ll be alright?” she asked you, worry lacing her words.
You flashed her a bright grin, “I’m a big girl,” you told her, “I’m pretty sure I can stay home alone for a bit.”
You turned away from your two concerned friends, but they continued the conversation silently. Asami sent Mako a look that implied he should stay, to which he groaned, but agreed.
He stretched. “I didn’t really want to go out to eat,” he told you, walking over to the couch, “I’d rather hang here.”
A light blush appeared at the idea of Mako staying with you, but you pushed all romantic thoughts away when you remembered how he felt about both Asami and Korra. You didn’t stand a chance against the rich daughter of the creator of the Sato-mobile and the Avatar. Picking up a broom, you began sweeping with a quiet, “OK.”
For a while, you and the firebender talked. About his brother, about your parents, about bending, about being a pro-bender. But, you mostly talked about Korra and Asami. Something that broke your heart. You wondered if he talked about you like he talked about them.
Still going about doing your chores, you saw Mako laying on the couch, messing with a fire that he had sprung up in his hands. You were reminded of a poem you had heard long ago.
‘Some say the world will end in fire.’
You dumped a glass of water on his hands and smirked when he looked up at you with shocked eyes.
‘Others say ice.’
He folded his arms and shut his eyes, ignoring you. Your heart dropped and you longed for him to do or say something. Daydreams of the teen wrapping his strong arms around you and whispering in your ear danced around in your head, distracting you to the point that you didn’t see Mako get up from his seat.
‘From what I’ve tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire.’
Though, it’d probably end poorly. Someone would get hurt, someone would feel betrayed, Hell would ensue. You decided you’d rather he give you the cold shoulder for a bit. But it seemed that Mako wasn’t much for that option. He cleared his throat to get your attention and, as you turned, threw the water from a large bucket onto you, soaking you to the bone. Grinning at him, you decided he really needed a hug.
‘But if I had to perish twice, I think I know enough of fate to say destruction ice would also be great, and would suffice.’
