You hummed quietly as you helped your little sister gather seashells and smooth stones for a sand castle. She was currently building a moat under the watchful eye of your friend and neighbor- and older man who seemed to treat you and your sister as his own grandchildren, perhaps to make up for your distant parents.

Regardless, the two of you got on. You packed her a lunch everyday and your neighbor would generally make sure she had something to eat by the time you got home. Your town was safe, so you trusted her to walk home on her own- so long as she locked the door behind her.

Finding a small, colorful shell that had yet to be broken, you leaned over to pick it up, only to have a larger hand land on top of yours.

You pulled away- as did the other person- with a quiet gasp, before looking up, flustered.

Before you stood a gorgeous young man in green swimming trunks. His green eyes closed as he smiled broadly, rubbing the back of his neck.

“S-sorry!” the two of you apologized at the same time, though he seemed a lot more composed about it.

“What’s with this?” you thought to yourself, trying to fight off the blush that was already prominent on your cheeks, “It’s like something in some sappy romance movie.”

You glanced down to where the shell had been, only to find it gone- swept away by the tide.

The man laughed a little bit- a sweet, resounding laugh that you couldn’t help but to catch. “I guess the ocean wanted her back, huh?” he asked you, bright eyes watching you with gentle amusement.

“I guess so,” you agreed, smiling back up at the man.

“Maybe I could help you find a new one for your, uh,” he paused, gesturing down at the shells and stones you had already gathered in a makeshift basket that consisted of you constantly holding your too big shirt out as a hammock for the decorations. “Collection?”

You giggled quietly. “My sister is building a sand castle.” You corrected him.

Another grin spread across his cheeks. “Sounds like fun!”

The two of you began walking down the beach together, eyes scanning the ground for shells or rocks. Falling into a comfortable silence, you felt yourself scanning the ground less and peeking over at the gentle giant next to you more. He was very fit- a swimmer, you decided- yet everything about his demeanor reminded you more of someone smaller, more delicate.

His stride was long, forcing to you to take two steps for his one, and that sweet smile of his seemed plastered on his face. You found yourself wanting to talk to him- to get to know him- but as soon as you opened your mouth, you were interrupted.

“Mako-chan!” a young-sounding voice shouted, causing your companion to glance up-- snapped from his own quiet thoughts.

A small blonde boy came running up to the two of you. “Mako-chan!” he said again, a bit breathless now, “You disappeared for so long! Where’d you go?” It seemed just then that the blonde noticed you next to ‘Mako-chan’.

He was a bit taken aback, but grinned widely at you. “Hello! Are you a friend of Mako-chan?”

You didn’t really know how to answer. Were you friends? You didn’t even actually know his name. And he certainly didn’t know yours- or even anything about you other than that you had a sister who wanted you to find things for a sand castle.

“We actually just met,” your olive-haired companion said with a smile before looking over at you, a soft blush on his cheeks. “And I don’t know your name!” he realized, with a small gasp.

“(F/n),” you told him gently with a smile, looking up at him from under your long lashes.

He smiled back at you, though his blonde friend seemed to take that as his cue to leave. “Makoto,” he responded, holding his hand out for you to shake.

You awkwardly took it, rustling the shells in your shirt but attempting not to drop any. Makoto seemed about to say something else, but something on the ground caught his eye and he knelt, not dropping your hand.

Blushing at the even more awkward position that the two of you were in now, you fidgeted nervously, but Makoto didn’t seem to see the problem.

He smiled up at you from the ground before lifting his other hand to the one that still held your smaller fingers. Gently, the tanned young man placed something in the palm of your hand before releasing you and standing. He blushed and rubbed the back of his neck, seeming to have realized how strange that must have looked.

You looked down at the small object in your palm- a shell like the one the two of you had first reached for.

“Found one,” he chuckled softly, before giving you a quick wave, “I guess you want to take those to your sister now.”

Smiling up at the man, you nodded, “She’ll love it,” you told him. “Thanks.”

His smile seemed to grow a bit, “Of course!”

“Mako-chan!” the blonde shouted again, reappearing with two other boys. Makoto looked over at them, before excusing himself to meet up with his friends.

You giggled, watching the four of them meet up. They began walking back to where the others had come from, but Makoto glanced back at you, waving once more.

Raising your hand in farewell, you waited until he had turned his back before you started your trek back up the beach to your sister.
